Prince Blackwell Master Thatchers was established in 1974 by Alan Prince. Lars Blackwell, his son in law, joined the company in 2005 and now carries out most of the thatching. Both are members of the Devon and Cornwall Master Thatchers Association.
Alan Prince is also the only thatcher who has been a member of the Devon Guild of Craftsman (www.crafts.org.uk.) He is a guest lecturer at the Plymouth School of Architecture, providing tuition to postgraduates at Plymouth University.
We thatch for a great number of private and commercial customers in South Devon and Cornwall, including the 14th-century Cott Inn in Dartington (see photo above) - one of the largest thatched roofs in the country.
Most of our business comes through word-of-mouth: from the owners of thatched buildings who come to us time and time again and through the recommendations they kindly provide.
